Viva La Revolution!:
Green Revolution snaps anti-victory streak with awe-inspiring Total Victory
by Captain Courageous
Hearts were hopeful and expectations were high when the Green Revolution FC gathered this fine Sunday afternoon to take on the Handsome Boy Modeling Club FC. Coming off a long losing streak, the Green Revolution were the historical underdogs. However, reinforced by several international and local young talents such as Rachid from Morocco, Andres from Colombia and Dylan from the US they surely were not going down without a fight.
You could feel the pressure building during the early minutes of the first half as the defense of the Green Revolution, headed by selfless efforts from Andres, Hwan-Il and Narek was fighting off the numerous attacks of the Handsome Boys. It was looking like another gloomy day for the Green Revolution, when Dylan received the ball on one of the GR counter attacks, passed a couple of defenders and directed the ball into the bottom left corner of the Handsome Boys’ net with a beautiful 15 yard shot. The fans were ecstatic.
The first goal of the season was both emotional and inspiring, and several players on both sides momentarily feinted from the excitement. A number of timely substitutions further strengthened the GR defense and took some pressure off Marin “The Shutter” Bozic, the 6’+ Croatian goalkeeper, who saved the future Agricultural and Applied Economists a number of times throughout the game.
Just 5 minutes before the half time Jeremy Weber, assisted by Rachid’s brilliant pass to the far left side of the box, stopped the ball and shot from almost point blank range. It almost looked like a miss when the ball came off the left post. Not so! The confused Handsome Boys’ goalkeeper could not do anything as the reflected ball hit him on the back and slowly crawled into the net, as he hopelessly scrambled after it.
The demoralized Handsome Boys’ hopes were absolutely destroyed on the 14-th minute of the second half, when after several dangerous and inspired GR attacks, Narek’s beautiful shot from 25 yards hit the upper left post of the HB goal and went in, catching the Boys and their goalkeeper in utter surprise.
The Green Revolution was not letting victory slip away, as the solid defensive play from Vardges, Ben, Fransisco, Hwan, Andres and Eric helped their devoted goalkeeper keep a clean sheet.
"That was cool," Ben said in a post-game interview. "It was fun and it was cruel. I think I gave the fans their money's worth."
