Predictions for the 2009-2010 Year in AAE

There is great excited for the year ahead, and the THC wrote down some of the exciting predictions for what will happen during the school year.  Please pay attention so that you don't miss any of these tremendous happenings:
1.      Marin is finally promoted to professor.
2.      Ken does so well as department chair that he is promoted to “department throne”
3.      AAE becomes so prominent a department that the economics department renames itself the “Unapplied and Unagricultural Economics Department”
4.      Jean Paul publishes a record 143 papers during the academic year
5.      The university generously gives the new building across University Ave to AAE…following our MST style take over of the building
6.      The THC Green Revolution wins the IM soccer title…several players leave grad school early to pursue their professional careers.
7.      Amazingly, Jeremy hits a snag that forces him to take 4.5 years to finish grad school…while David Garber mysteriously returns for a record tenth year of grad school
8.      The job market opens
9.      The “Brad Barham Beer Garden” is constructed on the roof of Taylor Hall…constructed with a heated greenhouse for winter relaxation, this allows Brad to finally wear shorts year-round in Wisconsin
10.     A first year student bravely ventures where no first year student has gone before…the fifth floor of Taylor Hall…then realizes they went too far and returns to the fourth floor…where they achieve another first – asking Barbara a question to which she does not know the answer
11.     After robust t-shirt sales (which will be available shortly), generous donations, and a failure to repay its president for his expenditures (reverse embezzlement sucks), the THC amazingly gets four digits in its bank account…immediately throws happy hour in the Brad Barham Beer Garden.  In addition, buys several forks that last for one week in the lounge.
12.     After really good behavior by students, food and drink are finally allowed into the computer lab.
13.     Vernetta wins American Idol
14.     UW-Madison enacts a hiring freeze…for the whole campus except for AAE
15.     Brian Gould uses Stata for the first time; it turns out that he, in fact, enjoys the black box
16.     After hiring new faculty members Tania Barham, Tomoki Fujii, Fang Lai, Andrew McKim, Karina Schoengold, Jason Scorse, and Aaron Swoboda,
our department finally hires the complete set of the 2005 graduates of Berkeley’s program.

International Spring Potluck and Awards Night 2009

At the THC International Potluck, the new econ-based rap group, Giffen Group, made their debut appearance.  Rocking the crowd with tight rhymes and really dorky economic jokes, MCs Optimus Rhyme and Principle-Agent illustrated their lyrical prowess and provided hope that the future of economics might consist of as many tight tracks as problem sets and papers.  Here is a recording of their first song, "Econorappers," which verifies their profound knowledge of economic theory and narrates their rise from the poverty line to some of the best rhymers combining economics and hip hop.  Look out for their first album (they are currently all-but-abum (ABA)), which is sure to win them the Nobel Prize, either in economics or hip hop

  • April 21--2007 Annual International Spring Potluck

The 2007 version of this famed annual rite of AAE passage was held in the main lounge of the stately Pres House, on Library Mall, and was MCed by loquacious THC President Van Butsic butsic@wisc.edu.  As always, students, faculty and staff  raised the bar for international cooking by a graduate student (or a graduate student's significant other) .

Congratulations to Dan Bromley and Vardges Hovhannisyan (re: Mrs. Bromley and Mrs. Hovhannisyan) for taking home the top prizes for cooking (re: good taste in spouses).
