Departmental Physical Facilities
5.1 Policy on Office Space
The department has office space for approximately 50 graduate students. Desk space is assigned based on the following priority listing: 1) Agricultural and Applied Economics majors with funding; 2) Non-departmental majors with funding from a member of the department faculty who lack office space elsewhere; 3) Agricultural and Applied Economics majors without funding; 4) Non-departmental majors with funding from a member of the department faculty who have other University office space. Preference within these categories for specific offices is based on seniority (time enrolled as a graduate student in the department). Students with assigned office space will be required to deposit $20 at the Bursar's Office in the Peterson Building in order to receive an office key and an outside door key to Henry Taylor Hall. This money will be refunded upon return of all keys. Students with keys will have access to the building on a 24-hour basis but must keep an after hours building pass and student I.D. card with them at all times; security personnel do check the building periodically after building hours.
5.2 Taylor-Hibbard Library
The Taylor-Hibbard Library, located on the first floor of Taylor Hall, serves the needs of the faculty, staff, and graduate students of the Agricultural and Applied Economics Department. The library’s collection includes major agricultural economics journals, books, and documents from a variety of government agencies and universities. The statistical collection is composed of USDA publications, the Census of Agriculture, and State of Wisconsin statistical publications. The library also has a collection of AAE M.S. and Ph.D. theses.
The library also houses the Torgerson Cooperatives Collection, serving the needs of the UW Center for Cooperatives. It is one of the largest cooperative collections in the world, with over 5,000 books, extensive subject files, a large archive collection and many newsletters and journals.
Circulation of Taylor-Hibbard Library materials is limited to faculty, staff and graduate students affiliated with the department. The library handles reserve readings for some graduate-level courses. A copy machine and computer may be used by library patrons.
The library seeks to maintain and develop a specialized collection in agricultural and applied economics with emphasis on particular areas, in accordance with the priorities and research interests of department members. In large part, it is the interdisciplinary nature of the collection that is unique, and the same materials are available to other users through the UW-Madison General Library System and other campus locations.
5.3 Halvorson-Ebling Computer Center
The Halvorson-Ebling Computer Center (HECC) is located in Room B4 in the basement of Taylor Hall. Printing, access to the Internet, electronic mail, and many software packages are provided on 26 PCs. The HECC is primarily for the use of students, both graduate and undergraduate, to do their course related work. Information on policies, usage and fees for the lab is available on the HECC web site.
Graduate students are given a personal login with a home directory, personal web page, and remote access to their files. DoIT, the UW computing center, provides e-mail, including 100MB of free message storage, training, and discounted software. Students wishing to connect their personal computers to the department network may do so provided they speak with the HECC director beforehand, to ensure their computers meet minimum security standards.
There may be (very few) times when the entire lab is reserved for instructional purposes. These times will be posted in advance. Taylor Hall building hours are 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Graduate students may enter the lab at other times with a building key, but must have an after-hours building pass and a student I.D. Security personnel do periodically check the lab after hours, and anyone without a valid building pass will be asked to leave immediately.
5.4 Department Check-out Procedures
Following is a list of Procedures students should follow when graduating and leaving the department. These procedures involve the department only; students should be sure to follow the Graduate School procedures for completing the thesis or dissertation. Please see the Academic Program Coordinator if you have any questions.
- Ph. D. Students inform Academic Programs Coordinator if you plan to attend graduation ceremonies and who your faculty escort will be.
- All students turn in any outstanding Taylor-Hibbard Library materials to room 106. Deposit thesis or dissertation if applicable.
- Give employment information to Academic Programs Coordinator, such as position title, place of employment, etc. If you gain employment after you leave, please forward the information to the Academic Programs Coordinator in care of the department. This information is used for various employment surveys throughout the year.
- Leave a forwarding address and telephone number with Academic Programs Coordinator in room 423. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT! This address will be used for forwarding mail, as well as helping people get in touch with you. Also please keep us informed of address changes so you will receive our alumni newsletter.
- Make arrangements to forward or close your e-mail account in the Halvorson-Ebling Computer Center and inform HECC Director that you are leaving.
- Leave your forwarding address in My UW so that the University will know where to mail your diploma. International students must pay a $5 fee to the Registrar in order to have the diploma mailed to an overseas address.
- Turn in any department keys to the building manager, who will give you a receipt for a refund of your key deposit at the Bursar's Office.
