Staff Paper No. 341, May 1992, 34p.

This paper reports the preliminary results of a two-stage contingent valuation study of groundwater protection. Attention is focused on how information affects the value placed on groundwater protection programs. Willingness to pay for a community wide groundwater protection program for nitrates is elicited before (ex ante) and after (ex post) the results of individual well tests were provided to rural residents. Information about nitrates was also varied across groups in the ex ante stage of the study.
