The Potential For Growth In Wisconsin Milk Production
A paper describing recent trends in milk per cow, cow numbers, and total milk production for
Wisconsin. This paper presents evidence that increases in the milk production of larger dairy
herds may be starting to exceed declines in the production of smaller dairy operations. The net
result is a possible increase in total Wisconsin milk production. May 2002
The Changing Dairy Industry: A Comparison of Recent Trends In Wisconsin Milk Production To

Wisconsin, the US, and selected dairy states. One of the findings of this paper is that Wisconsin
milk production is projected to grow at roughly the same rate as is projected for most other dairy

Are Farmland Prices Being Driven Up By Provisions of the Internal Revenue Code?
Some commentators have argued that the recent escalation in farmland values has been fueled,
in part, by the like-kind exchange provisions of the federal income tax code. The reasoning is that
farmers are selling farmland at a premium for development purposes and then paying prices for farmland
that are above the agricultural value of land so that they can defer the payment of taxes on capital gains.
The purpose of this paper is to determine if it is financially advantageous to pay more than the agricultural
value of land in order to postpone the payment of taxes on capital gains from the sale of land to a developer. April 2007

Economic Considerations Relative to the Length of Dairy Cow Dry Periods
A Power Point presentation detailing an economic analysis performed to determine how returns
and costs vary depending on the length of dry period in dairy cows. This analysis is based on data

and 56 days. The results of this economic analysis suggest the higher net returns can be obtained
when a 28 dry period is used.
