Research Interests

My research centers on understanding the connections between farms and other organizations in food systems. Special attention is paid to the social and economic connections which extend beyond the economics of farm enterprises. Attention is also paid to the role of leadership and the development of leadership in community economic development. Methods are primarily descriptive, case studies and conceptual systems modeling.

Outreach and Extension Interests

I work to help county and state based UW-Extension Faculty and staff understand the relationships between leadership, community organization, and community social capital in shaping the base for community economic development. I work with the Wisconsin Rural Leadership Program and county based extension faculty and staff to devlop capacities of community leaders through learning programs. In Agriculture and Natural Resources extension programs I serve as a member of teams developing educational programs around issues in Agricultural Land Use, and Emerging Markets for Agricultural and Food Products.
